Prison Ministry

The Presbyterian Church’s ministry to incarcerated women in North Carolina began in the early 1980’s through the efforts of Presbyterian Women. Presbyterians across the state made it possible for
the first female chaplain in the North Carolina prison system to be hired. The work is now focused
upon residents at the Raleigh Correctional Center for Women (RCCW,) the state minimum security
unit, where women are anticipating parole and preparing for a return to society.

The ministry provides a variety of support services including pastoral care and counseling, encouragement and assistance with education and job training, recruitment of sponsoring volunteers and aftercare support following release. The Community Volunteer (CV) Sponsor program trains sponsors in working with residents in preparation for their return to society.

How Can You Help? There are many opportunities available for CV sponsors, tutors, recreation assistants and clerical assistants.
